Welcome
to the Ranch of
Hal & Jeanette Rees
Our ranch and herd are located in Central Washington, approximately three
hours from either Seattle or Spokane, just north of the small town of Douglas, WA.
Jeanette and I have been working with bison/buffalo producers since 1986; several years
before we started our own buffalo business. This is our second buffalo ranch, the first of
which we started in 1990 just outside of Ellensburg, WA. Jeanette decided that we should
take our success with buffalo back to her roots in Douglas County, WA. An opportunity to
expand our acreage and reacquaint ourselves with tendinitis came with the ranch here in
Douglas County.
Currently we have 160 acres of pasture fenced for our herd along with a
corral system that covers about two acres. All of the pasture is seeded to dry-land grass
that has been selected for both our moisture conditions AND palatability for the herd.
They are the final authority on whether or not you have the right pasture. Thanks to the
assistance of Jeanettes father, Joe Bourton, we seeded the pastures with knowledge
of the local farming techniques and came up with grassland that is hard to beat in this
part of the world. We have raised buffalo under both irrigated and dry-land pasture
conditions; something to keep in mind if you have grass and/or forage questions. There are
significant differences that should be considered if you are thinking about getting
started in the buffalo world.
If you are in the buffalo business and have questions, if you are
considering the purchase of a herd, or if you just need some advise on how to cook buffalo
meat, give us a call. They, or we, may have the answer to the question that will make a
significant difference in the success of your adventure. We have information and we have a
consultation team that makes house calls.
